It is a parasitic hemiptera insect of plants belonging to the family Dactylopiidae, whose host is the nopales or prickly pears (Opuntia).
It is also known by the name carmin de cochinilla, grana cochinilla.
It reproduces in the prickly pear cactus, and from which a natural red or crimson extract is obtained, which when mixed with acids (such as lemon juice) gives other shades of red, but when combined with the alkaline changes to purple .
