COCHINILLA
Cochineal is traditionally used in Peru since the pre-Inca civilizations in watery state using alum as a mordant, to dye alpaca and cotton hairs. Currently, the main use of cochineal is in the modality of carmine, which is a versatile product of great value for many industries
The cochineal insect is a parasitic hemiptera of plants belonging to the family Dactylopiidae, whose host is the nopales or prickly pears (Opuntia). It is also known by the name carmin de cochinilla, grana cochinilla.
Physical characteristics
- It is a solid formed by granules that correspond to the females of the insect.
- These granules have irregular, oval and segmented shape, the size of the granules is variable.
- Chemical characteristics.
- Percentage of carminic acid: Greater than or equal to 18%.
